We'll be honest we missed the opening of Shankey's last year on Dalston Lane and when it moved to Well Street in Hackney last November. But when a reader brought it to our attention recently we had to admit, it does sound interesting.
Self-billed as 'Spuds n Spice - Indian food & Irish booze in an old bookies." Clearly they're doing something right as chef and TV personality Andi Oliver bigged them up in a list of her favourite London restaurants this week. She described it as "the most welcoming place in the world".
The restaurant's the brainchild of Irish mixologist Eoghan Shankey who trained up at Milk & Honey and Indian chef Sacha Henry. Eoghan's in charge of the Irish-inspired cocktails which include must-haves like Spuds & Butter - made with poitin, lime and Kerrygold butter; and Bono which features Irish whiskey, absinthe and Peychaud's.
Chef Sacha takes the remit further still with his dishes, recent ones include:
- Achill Rock Oyster - Galway oysters with a disco mignonette and crispy anchovy and chilli
- Chaat Potatoes - crispy potatoes with Bombay onions and a honey and naga curry sauce
- Mama's Lamb - slow-cooked lamb neck in a cumin and bone marrow broth with green chilli and mint
And for anyone who's been following the "going for a Chinese" debacle on TikTok there's another special worth looking out for, the Spice Bag - aloo chat with honey and naga glazed chicken and a black prawn sambal.
To sum up, this is a fusion restaurant we can 1000% get behind.
