If you’re knocking about King’s Cross and looking for a new bar, then why not head for one of London’s major landmarks, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel (also where the Spice Girls filmed their ‘Wannabe’ video, fact fans), soon to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The Midland Grand Dining Room, is going to launch with a separate bar, The Gothic Bar.
It takes over what was once the bar at The Gilbert Scott, a much-missed bar and what was a very handy place to go in King's Cross. So this will be a welcome addition to the area.
Named in a nod to the building’s Gothic Revival architectural style, the bar will serve cocktail classics as well as those with an eau-de-vie theme alongside a bespoke absinthe list in an opulent space (courtesy of architect and interior designer Hugo Toro) that will hold some sophisticated late-night events, ranging from readings to live music.
You can look forward to some French-influenced bar food from Midland Grand Dining Room’s chef Patrick Powell (formerly of Chiltern Firehouse and Allegra). In fact, we already see ourselves perched on one of the bar’s animal-print banquettes sipping an Eau de Martini (X Muse, grand vermouth, spritzed with a choice of five eaux de vie) beneath the grand stone Gothic windows, with one eye on a replica of the original revolving door (one of the first of its kind), plotting our next adventure.
We also like the sound of the Ode Fashioned: roasted chestnut bourbon, date syrup, Oloroso sherry and topped with a red-and-white chocolate peacock stamp.
And with guests allowed to louche their own absinthe from taps at the bar, meaning they control how diluted their preferred drink will be, this bar sounds like it should carry a ‘delightfully dangerous’ warning, à la bygone bohemian-glamour era.
