In a nutshell: New all-day restaurant in a brand new neighbourhood

Summing it all up: Sven-Hanson Britt (ex Ritz and BBC’s MasterChef: The Professionals finalist and Rematch winner) is overseeing the food at this new restaurant in an all-new community in East London. It's starting as a shop with takeaway food with an all-day restaurant to come.

The low-down

November is normally one of the biggest months for London restaurant openings - but the lockdown put paid to that. Yet it's still not deterring some restaurants who are going ahead with launches - first for takeaway and then opening fully once restrictions are lifted. 

The latest of these is Homestead, opening in London City Island. If you're wondering exactly where that is - it's a new development on the Limmo Peninsula, just across the river from the O2 (apparently dubbed a mini Manhattan). The restaurant is a team-up between Sven-Hanson Britt (An ex Ritz chef who also runs Oxeye, a residency recently seen at Carousel), Tris Hillier (Kanvass Projects) and Scott Ward (JKS Group and Maze). They've put Executive Chef James Durrant (ex-Maze) in charge of the kitchen. 

Right now, it's open as a deli and store, serving takeaway options from breakfast to dinner. They also have homemade pasta and a selection of cheese and fish, all sourced ethically from British day boats, high welfare farms and small artisan producers (the close link with producers will be a big thing for Homestead). As for takeaway food, that will include:

  • BBQ quail, spiced pear, salt baked celeriac
  • Smoked Devon eel, potato rosti, avruga caviar
  • Arhuaco chocolate mousse, caramelized peanut, black sesame

There's also a mobile bar on-site with Brewdog - so if you live locally, that'll be very handy for takeaway beers - and a coffee shop, florist and bottle shop.

When they open fully, it will be an all-day affair with breakfast including dishes like Dorset crab or smoked ham hock crumpet with poached st ewes rich eggs, cayenne spiced hollandaise and also roasted sweet potato hash with steamed kale, spring onion and harissa roasted tomatoes.
