'Tis the season for parties, and we loved the idea behind the one last night to publicise the imminent release of Christmas at Downton on DVD. The PR folks got Hus Vedat, Executive Chef at Westminster's St Ermin's Hotel to come up with a range of Downton-inspired canapes.

Having scoffed the lot, we can heartily recommend them. In fact, here's a recipe for one of them for you to serve up as the perfect TV snack come Christmas Day.

Crab Meat Canapés (1917)
Simple to prepare and light but flavoursome, these canapés were a post-war favourite
1 cup crab meat
1/4 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp mustard
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp horseradish
Chop the crab meat, mix well with seasonings, and spread on thin rounds of untoasted brown bread. Garnish with small cube of lemon
