Gaztela brings Basque cheesecakes (including a blue cheese version) to Notting Hill

Up until now, La Maritxu has had a bit of a monopoly as far as Basque-style cheesecakes go, but now a contender has entered the ring. Gaztela has just opened in Notting Hill and they have one version that you'll have to try.

Gaztela comes from Inna and Ignacio, a Spanish-Ukrainian couple who met studying hospitality in Spain. It's all about Basque cheesecake, but they say theirs is a more modern take on the dessert, with an extra creamy, barely set centre, using their own blend of hard and soft cheeses. Having spent lots of time refining the recipe, they launched on Westbourne Park last week and they have three cheesecakes on offer.

There's the classic option and a dulce de leche version but the one we feel we need to try is the blue cheese Basque cheesecake. They tell us that it's still very much a sweet cheesecake but with the balance of a savoury hit that comes from the blue cheese. They'll also be adding some more flavours after they're properly up and running. The cheesecakes here are served by the slice (£7.50) or as a whole cheesecake which feeds 10 (£55).

So if, like us, you can't resist a good Basque cheesecake when you see one, this is definitely one to try.
