Heston announces plans to close Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

Within hospitality circles, it's been something of an open secret for a while, but Heston Blumenthal (in an interview with The Times) has finally confirmed that Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at The Mandarin Oriental is closing.

The restaurant opened 15 years ago, with Ashley Palmer-Watts as the Head Chef (and who is now, of course, heading up the food at The Devonshire). It was a big success at the time, benefiting from the high profile of The Fat Duck and with Heston himself much more of a household name. It eventually went on to become one of London's few two-Michelin-starred restaurants, with the Meat Fruit (a parfait in the shape of a mandarin) and the Tipsy Cake quickly becoming must-have signature dishes.

In recent years, its profile hasn't been quite as big, and Heston himself has been very public about his battles with bipolar disorder. We had been hearing rumours of closure over the past few months before the confirmation today, but there's still a fairly long time before the restaurant shuts its doors, as closure isn't planned until the end of January 2027. The last month will feature some celebratory menus, but until then, you've got plenty of time to head along for one last Meat Fruit.

As for what will be replacing it? The Mandarin Oriental has the rest of the year to work that out...
