Hidden behind a London Fields wonton bar, Cafe Kowloon marries Hong Kong inspo with London vibes

cafe kowloon opening in london fields

Back in October, we brought you the news that the team behind Mr Bao and Daddy Bao were opening Wonton Charlie's in London Fields. But what we didn't know at the time was that there was going to be a secret Cantonese restaurant hidden at the back of it. Cafe Kowloon is just gearing up to open and it's going to serve up a contemporary London spin on Hong Kong dishes. Owners Frank Yeung (whose dad is from Hong Kong) and Abhinav Malde sound like they've got an amazing menu planned.

First up there's going to be curry fish ball skewers and monkey head Cheung fun. For anyone still pining after the Ibérico Secreto char siu they used to serve up at Wun's Tea House in Soho, that's going to be on the menu here. And we very much want to order the Hong Kong French toast with peanut butter crème pâtissière.

To find it, you'll need to head through the arch at Wonton Charlie's. If you like being up at the counter, there'll be ten seats overlooking the open kitchen, but we rather like the sound of the banquettes, complete with Lazy Susans for the family-style menu.

Cocktails sound on point with a Bo Lai Gimlet and Pocari Sweat milk punch, while London importers Theatre of Wine are behind the wine list.

With London suppliers including Fin & Flounder, E5 Bakehouse and Clean Bean Tofu, and Wonton Charlie's already doing solid business, it looks like Cafe Kowloon will be another good addition to London Fields.
