We can't be the only ones hearing American voices literally wherever we are in London. So it's clear there's already going to be a large expat audience for the new American deli opening up at King's Cross. But Tommy's Sandwiches are hoping that their loaded subs are also going to be the kind of sandwich that gets Londoners excited too.
According to owner, Washington native Tommy, he was inspired to open his sandwich shop after missing the big subs back home. "The UK has a sandwich problem," he says. "Sandwiches were invented there, but frankly, the sandwiches there are pretty terrible. They are uninspiring." We'd take issue with that given the evidence to the contrary, but we'll let it slide for now.
Having worked for years in various Subways back home, Tommy reckons he knows a thing or two about running a sandwich shop, and after two years of looking for the right site he eventually found an old coffee spot just yards from the entrance to King's Cross station.
The launch menu features five key sandwiches (we understand a vegan offering is in development) with options including a Tommy's Club (turkey, ham, bacon, Swiss, with pickles, avocado, mayo and hot mustard, and a Rainer with roast beef, Swiss cheese, crispy shallots, rocket, red onion, jalapeno mayo and Dijon. The bread is a Dutch crunch roll. You can grab a big dill pickle and sides like potato salad and coleslaw and there'll be chocolate chip cookies for dessert.
They soft-launched just before Christmas but are opening officially today with perfect timing for London's return to work after the holidays.
