For more than a century, they've been pulling pints in the Hoxton pub The Macbeth. More recently than that, the pub forged quite the reputation as a live music venue with everyone from Florence + The Machine to Fontaines DC playing there. Now the pub's got a new owner and it looks like the food side of things is about to take a sharp turn for the better.
Jamie Allan has been best known for being one half of Four Legs, who transformed the fortunes of The Plimsoll in Finsbury Park before also opening the fabulous Tollington's. Now he's leaving North London to head east to Hoxton and The Macbeth with his good friend Patrick Nolan. While this will very much still remain a pub, the food offering is going to be more of a European affair, looking to the tascas of Portugal for inspiration. Better still, it's going to have the same nighttime vibe as Portugal with food available until 11pm.
There isn't much in the way of details of what exactly that food will be, but we've been told to expect snail rice, pork and cheese rolls and morcela fina (aka Portuguese black pudding). Allan, who was brought up in Hackney, says, "It’s a beautiful opportunity to work in a part of London that feels very close to my heart."
As part of the refurb, they're stripping back the pub to its old bones and putting in a brand new oak bar. They're also restoring the Victorian mural showing the banquet scene from the Scottish play that inspired the pub's name.
