His main home may be Elystan Street, but Phil Howard's other business looks like it's doing pretty well. Fresh pasta bar Notto is already on Piccadilly and in Covent Garden, and a third is on the way to the City.
If you're as yet unfamiliar with the restaurant, our original Test Drive gives a pretty good rundown. Essentially, it sees Howard using the skills and experience cooking pasta in Michelin-starred restaurants to create a much more affordable menu.
This latest Notto will be doing things slightly differently though, pitched as a fast-casual affair aimed at cityfolk. So there will be a concentration on just six pasta dishes and four salads here. The pastas include rigatoni cacio e pepe, spaghetti with a Bolognese of aged British beef, field mushrooms and red wine and also ravioli of Delica pumpkin with brown butter, capers and sage. They're all under £15, with the exception of a £25 strozzapreti with black truffles.
The salads include The Amalfi, a Nicoise-style salad with line-caught tuna and crunchy chickpeas but the Burrata Bar has certainly caught our interest. There will be six options for a burrata dish, served with options like smashed green olives or sundried tomato dressing.
So it's very much pitched as primarily as a quick lunchtime affair, but every pasta dish is still cooked to order. It'll probably do very well here.
