The Lanesborough is having a Bridgerton-themed afternoon tea

It seems ever so preposterous that it hasn’t happened yet, but a Bridgerton-themed afternoon tea is finally coming to London. If you’ve not heard of the addictive Netflix series, we’re not sure whether you need to self-isolate more or less, but don’t worry – it’s not too late to catch up with the watercooler/Zoom gossip when season two launches on 25 March.

It’s unlikely to be mere coincidence that this is also the very date that The Lanesborough is rolling out its luxurious Bridgerton-themed afternoon tea in Knightsbridge, created in partnership with Netflix and production company Shondaland, no less. What more excuse do you need to don your Regency best and settle at a table in their sumptuous dining room, already renowned for its Regency décor, including an original sky dome with bas-relief artwork cast from 250 different mouldings. The perfect setting to reduce one’s entire life to a single moment, you might say.

We were hoping the afternoon tea would be a bit extra, and it doesn’t disappoint. The Lanesborough’s Head Pastry Chef, Kevin Miller, starts out with a classical approach:

  • Finger sandwiches and brioche sliders, with classic fillings such as Coronation chicken, coriander, egg mayonnaise, wholegrain mustard; smoked salmon, horseradish and watercress; organic cucumber, natural yoghurt and mint; or rare roast beef, black pepper mayonnaise and mustard seed
  • Scones, cream and jam

He has then created some special Bridgerton moments with a curated cake and sweet treat concept:

  • The Queen’s Diamond: hand-crafted chocolate blended with honey, green cardamom and white chocolate ganache, all displayed in a jewel-coloured ring box as a nod to Edwina Sharma
  • The Rake: a chocolate sable cake with milk chocolate mousse and a whipped passionfruit and curd centre, finished in a dark chocolate glaze, chocolate shard collar and a whipped passionfruit cream Chantilly cravat, inspired by Viscount Anthony
  • A True Love Match: a Charlotte sponge cake with layers of strawberry jam and vanilla twisted cream, inspired by Queen Charlotte
  • The Lady Whistledown: a cake with a pistachio financier and pistachio mousse coated in milk chocolate and cocoa butter, reminiscent of Lady Whistledown’s inkpot and quill
  • All is Fair in Love & War: a dessert designed as an ode to the Bridgerton family and for sharing between two, it consists of a rosewater cheesecake with a raspberry berry centre on a crumble-crunch base, coated in white chocolate that’s been sprayed blue and embossed with a bee which is, of course, the symbol of Bridgerton.

If all of that isn’t enough to make you swoon, there’s also a special cocktail created for the occasion called The Pall Mall, which is inspired by the original Regency Gin Punch that was associated with social life in the Regency period. Comprising Hendrick’s gin and Graham Blend No5 white port, it will be served to you in a high glass teacup with a tea strainer ready to infuse the drink with dried hibiscus flowers and garnished with a floating lotus flower. A non-alcoholic alternative of The Pall Mall is also available, should this already be too much excitement for one afternoon.

But if you wish to be entertained, then do it. Be bold.
