Top Burmese restaurant Lahpet is opening in Covent Garden

Top Burmese restaurant Laphet is opening in Covent Garden

27/1/22 - updated with opening date

They started life as a stall on Maltby Street before becoming a popular Shoreditch restaurant - and now Lahpet are heading to the centre of town for their biggest venture yet.

They're coming to The Yards, a new area carved out in Covent Garden, which the huge Dishoom there is now part of (it backs onto the new space).

As in Shoreditch, founders Dan Anton and Zaw Mahesh (the head chef) will be bringing their own take on Burmese regional specialities and staple dishes. The Covent Garden restaurant will have both Lahpet favourites and new dishes including:

  • Roasted pork belly & bamboo shoots (Wet thar myit chin) made with shallot, fermented soya bean paste, garlic and chilli
  • Rakhine fish noodle soup (Rakhine monti) -  a spicy and sour soup, cooked with fermented fish paste, chilli, tamarind and black pepper (made with sea bream and squid)
  • Shan Fish & Rice (Shan htamin), a popular Shan state street food dish, with jasmine rice, sea bream, potato, tomato, fried garlic and shallots, peanuts and chives

Classics include the Lahpet Thohk pickled tea leaf salad (pickled tea, double-fried beans, cabbage, tomato, chilli, dried shrimp, sesame seeds, garlic oil, peanuts) and Mohinga (Catfish and lemongrass chowder) and Coconut Noodles with Chicken.

As before, they'll have cocktails alongside (expect the Lahpet Margarita to make an appearance). As for the restaurant itself, they'll have space for 100 inside and 50 more on a heated terrace on the first floor (and more on the courtyard up front). So it's a much bigger restaurant for them.
