The new Sackler Gallery on the Serpentine adds The Magazine restaurant

The new Sackler Gallery on the Serpentine adds The Magazine restaurantA new gallery is coming to London this week as the Serpentine Sackler Gallery opens its doors. The gallery takes over a grade II listed building right in the heart of Kensington Gardens and partners it with an ever so slightly modern addition by architect Zaha Hadid. As part of the modernisation, but opening a little later, they're also adding a new restaurant called The Magazine with German chef Oliver Lange in charge.

The restaurant is housed in the new modern structure - with glass walls opening onto the gardens. Within that, Lange will be serving lunch and dinner, weekend brunch and traditional Sunday roasts. Lange aims to bring influences of Japanese cooking into European cuisine, which has apparently given him the nickname "Ollysan" - something that'll be referred to in the menu (eg. "Ollysan’s Sushi"). As befits the experimental nature of the building, we can expect something experimental from the cooking too, making a departure from the normal gallery fare.

The menu will change seasonally, with opening examples being...

  • Starters: Big volcano roll, spicy salmon, quail egg, black pudding and langoustine or robata-grilled freshwater eel, duck liver terrine, apple and brioche
  • Mains: Iberico pork cheeks, heritage carrots, plum and crackling or Dublin Bay prawns, baby pak choi, corn scone
  • Desserts: Warm chocolate bread pudding and roasted tea ice cream or Tapioca tonka rice pudding and mango sorbet
  • Brunch: H. Forman and Sons’ smoked salmon “pizza”, crème fraíche and lemon or short rib hash, potatoes, carrots and poached Clarence Court egg

The wine list will feature "favourites from the Old World as well as German, Austrian and English wines, New World wines and a carefully sourced ‘artists series’ of fine wines." And finally they'll have a cocktail list including the "Shochu and Elderberry Sour" (Shochu, elderberry cordial, ripped lemon balm, pressed lemon, egg white and clover honey).

The Magazine opens on November 1 at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, West Carriage Drive, Kensington Gardens, London W2 2AR. For more info, follow them on Twitter.
