A new restaurant has arrived in the City, opening somewhat under the radar late last month. Bulbul hasn't opened out of nowhere, though, as the names behind it are apparently a big deal in India.
Rohan D'Ssouza and Twinkle Keswani are behind a number of restaurants across India, like Pisco by the Beach in Goa, while Dsouza originally started as a chef in London working with Marco Pierre White. They've taken over what was apparently an old printing press in Blackfriars and converted it into a high-end restaurant with a focus on regional Indian cuisine. To that mind, the kitchen is run by three chefs (including Dsouza) from different regions of India, which they're hoping is going to give it that authentic feel.
On the menu, you'll find dishes like Dsouza's "Dorothy's Braised Goan Chorizo Sausages," sausages braised in chorizo fat with banana shallots and green chilli, served with warm poi. There's also "Aunty Marie's Goan Shrimp Balchao" and Mewari Laal Maas, which is a Rajput dish of slow-braised lamb in bold red chilli and spiced gravy.
It's early days, but it seems to be getting decent reviews so far. So if you're looking for something new in the City, this might be worth keeping an eye on.
