Taqueria in Notting Hill has been one of London's most longstanding Mexican restaurants, having opened on Westbourne Grove some 20 years ago. However, they've decided that after two decades, it's time for a bit of a rethink, and they've found the ideal man to help with that. Last year, Jackson Boxer breathed new life into his Notting Hill restaurant Orasay by relaunching it as Dove, and now he's helping to do the same with Taqueria, which is relaunching as TAQ.
To do that, Boxer is teaming up with chef Eduardo Tishima, who himself has a good pedigree in London Mexican restaurants. He designed the menu for viral Soho hit CDMX Tacos, as well as working as a chef at Side Hustle, itself known for great tacos (and some excellent chef collabs). Eduardo will be the Culinary Director here, while Jackson Boxer and the Dove team will be giving support to the current team, including Elias Marin who remains as head chef.
So the new menu here will be centred around classic tacos, tostadas and quesadillas. On the taco front, you'll find fillings like tempura fish and macha mayo as well as grilled chuck steak with beef fat and matchstick fries. Tostadas, meanwhile, will have toppings like tuna, guac, and macha mayo or chicken with frijoles, green mole, sesame and verdura. And you'll also find quesadillas stuffed with cheese and carnitas, mushroom or chorizo.
There are some dishes that move away from the classic too. For instance, Eduardo will be launching his own take on the famous off-menu burger at Dove, albeit in taco form. That's the "Colombia" which uses the same secret blend of dry-aged beef as Dove in a thinner smashed style. It's basted in smoked beef fat and finished off with Red Leicester, fried onions and pickled jalapeno chillies. That sounds like the absolute must-have on the menu.
The menu here also has extras like chorizo and jalapeno croquettas, fried shrimp taco dorados and the TAQ tostadito chips, topped with carnitas, salsa verde, crema and verdura. And finally, on the drinks side, they'll have classic margaritas, palomas and mezcalitas, all at £10, Mexican lagers and a tight wine list.
It sounds like a good step forward for Taqueria which, a few years back, made a very unwise move to try and trademark the word taqueria in the UK. The response to that wasn't exactly positive, so striking forward with a brand new approach and teaming with one of the area's best chefs is a good move all around.
