Asma Khan's Darjeeling Express is on the move again

Asma Khan's Darjeeling Express is on the move again

Asma Khan's hugely successful Darjeeling Express has moved around quite a bit in the past. It originally started as a supperclub in Soho, then opened in Kingly Court. It moved to Covent Garden for about a year and a half and then back to Kingly Court for its longest stint yet. But now, after three years, Darjeeling Express is on the move again.

The new Darjeeling Express will open at 36-40 Rupert Street, taking over the space that was once Hovarda (and for a short while David Thompson's Long Chim). It's a much bigger space than the current Darjeeling Express (it will fit in 130 diners) and will be the first one that's spread across two floors.

As ever, the restaurant will continue the focus on a mix of Bengali, Hyderabadi, and Kolkatan cuisine, with the biryani supper club events being the biggest draw. Asma Khan runs the kitchen with an all-female team, something that's unique in London restaurants. Of the move, she says "As we continue to grow, Shaftesbury Capital has supported us with a space that allows our all-female team to remain front and centre, while taking the next step in our exciting journey."

We'll have more news on this closer to the opening date.
