There has been a catalogue of high-profile restaurant closures across London recently, but the shuttering of Adam Simmonds' eponymous restaurant in King's Cross is the second chef-led venture in the area to fold in as many months. The other was the shock closure of Victor Garvey at The Midland Grand. In a statement issued by the Megaro Hotel yesterday, they said the decision to close their high-end restaurant was "made in light of the challenging economic climate and disappointing trading performance, which have made the operation unsustainable".
The idea of opening a Noma-esque restaurant (as Grace Dent put it) in the heart of King's Cross was always going to be a challenging proposition. Not many people head to that part of town for a high-end tasting menu experience. And certainly, the terrible drubbing the restaurant got from Giles Coren at the time won't have helped.
For our part - and both Grace Dent and blogger Andy Hayler agreed with us - we thought Adam's food was great. But the location was never an easy sell.
