One UK restaurant critic has clearly decided that they can do the job better than the people he's been reviewing. According to Restaurant website and a post on Instagram, William Sitwell is getting ready to open a new hotel in Somerset.
He'll be taking over The White Hart in Wiveliscombe, a pub which has fairly recently been through a big revamp (in 2023), but closed the doors this week. He's suggesting the pub is to be called "Casa Wivey" (a local's abbreviation for the town) and will be a "chic hotel and Italian restaurant" He's apparently teaming up with local pub operators Jon and Millie Coward for the job, but they're also looking for some more outside investors. Sitwell has already been working with the pub in its previous incarnation, with his "Sitwell Food Safaris".
Will the longstanding restaurant critic and well-known Reform member be able to put his money (and in this case other people's money) where his mouth is? And a bigger question - will fellow restaurant critics visit and give him an easy ride or the kind of scathing write-up he's recently given Tom Kerridge's Chalk Freehouse, Kokin or Tom Brown? We'll have to see, but let's at least hope for a visit by Andy Lynes.
