Islington has a new sushi and grill restaurant, this time via Amsterdam. Sushi Fanatics, billed as a "hidden sushi izakaya", will be taking over the space from Hot Stone on Chapel Market and hare opening it as "Guru Guru".
The original Amsterdam location has built up something of a fanbase over there for their compact restaurant serving up various options of nigiri, maki, donburi and more. They also have a range of "creative maki" with options including cucumber and fried shrimp, surrounded by tuna, salmon, izumidai and avocado. Recent menus have also included various gyoza, deep-fried shrimp with crumbs with truffle mayo sauce, pumpkin croquette and chicken karaage.
Over here, the restaurant is billed as a retro listening bar serving sushi, binchotan grill, sake and otsumami, so it seems much more of a bar than the original Amsterdam venue. Dishes on the menu are traditional sushi platters, and dishes like a "wasabi roulette" where one out of six sushi pieces is "overloaded" with wasabi. Expect rice boxes, grilled black cod and tuna and more.
