We know that times are tough for pubs, but on the flipside it's never been a better time to get a great meal at a London pub. Earlier this year we devoted a new guide to the city's pubs with great upstairs dining rooms. And now that list is about to get a new addition.
The pub in question is the William IV in Islington. The 200-year-old pub reopened a year ago with duo Lee Godwin and Mike Harrington in charge. Those two got a lot of experience working at Barworks on places like Mare Street Market and the Well & Bucket so they know what they're doing. Having spent time working on getting the menu in the pub right, where they serve up dishes like slow-cooked mutton pies and rarebit crumpets, they're now turning their attention to the pub's dining room.
That's going to open this winter with its own menu focusing on creating dishes using the best produce (they've got Swaledale Butchers and Wright Bros among their suppliers). Dishes you'll find there include:
- Guinness-glazed beef short rib (cooked for 48 hours)
- Butterflied mackerel with ravigote sauce and samphire
- Hogget chops with anchovy sauce
And, as is only right and proper, Sundays are going to be devoted to serving up a proper roast in both the pub and the new dining room.
Shooting across the bow of The Devonshire they say they'll be serving up a perfect pint of Guinness, along with a list of fine wines and we'll have to try out the 2:1 Coastal Martini served with a single oyster.
