Things move pretty fast in restaurant news, and we like it when a chef keeps us on our toes. As we previously told you, Eyal Shani, founder of much-hyped Miznon (part of his 40+ global restaurant empire) already has another restaurant opening planned, called Seven North. But now we hear that he is also launching a restaurant before then called Lilienblum.
Opening on the former Passo restaurant site (next door to Daffodil Mulligan), Lilienblum is a celebration of all things Tel Aviv (named after the street of one of Shani’s first Tel Aviv restaurants). Also from Israel, chef Oren King will run the kitchen, having honed his skills at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Hide and Roka.
If you’re expecting more mad Miznon-like action, Lilienblum is less of a fast-paced pita restaurant and more of a family-friendly affair, with sharing-style platters and a bit of flair - and it retains the great alfresco urban terrace from Passo. Some things are familiar, though. The menu will be as quirky to decipher as ever, with dishes listed by ingredient rather than divided into starters and mains.
Some of the menu items that should make you look twice include the following:
- Seafood pan-roasted in tomato ovaries
- Green asparagus in a paper envelope
- A slice of cabbage cake that melts into itself
- Pearls from the ground with farro and clams
- Ribeye steak the way God intended
The drinks list will focus on lesser-known Israeli vineyards, along with European producers (including a significant Burgundy selection). Cocktails cover the classics as well as more experimental options, such as the Kittini (tequila and grapefruit martini).
