The City gets a new Portuguese wine and tapas bar in Bar 1790

bar 1790 brings portuguese wine and food to the City

If you're not doing Dry January, you might be interested to learn about a new Portuguese wine bar that opened up just before Londoners broke for the Christmas holidays. Bar 1790 might be a brand new addition to the City, but it's following a more than 230 year old tradition for the Sandeman port company which has been based in St Swithin's Lane since 1790, hence the name of the bar.

Billed as a 'contemporary wine bar and restaurant' the all day spot is open from breakfast onwards serving up a range of snacks along with small and larger plates.

Dishes include

  • Salt cod croquettes
  • Crab and tomato tartare on grilled sourdough
  • Deep-fried quail, charred gem lettuce
  • Portuguese sausage, caramelised onions & sherry

As you'd expect there will be warm pastel de nata on offer alongside Iberian cheeses and cured Portuguese meats.

The wine list is an almost exclusively Portuguese affair and they'll also be serving up port and tonics alongside a short cocktail list.
