We do like a floating restaurant (the Cheese Barge is a thing of wonder) and this latest restaurant on the water sounds like another very promising addition to Regents Canal. Caravel comes from brothers Fin and Lorcan Spiteri who have taken over a restored barge next door to Studio Kitchen (on the canal between Hoxton and Islington) and converted it into a 40-seater restaurant.
Lorcan Spiteri has worked at Quo Vadis, Oldroyd, Rochelle Canteen and Studio Kitchen (of which Caravel is part of) and has taken his inspiration from "the food that he and Fin enjoyed growing up". So the menu features:
- Sesame prawn toast with spiced tartare
- Confit duck rissoles
- Violet artichoke with kohlrabi
- White crab tagliatelle, fennel & garlic
- Crispy pork belly, green beans & anchoïde
- Roast hake, confit potatoes and curry sauce
- Blood orange jelly with honeycomb
Meanwhile, Fin Spiteri takes on the drinks, having worked at 69 Colebrooke Row, Untitled and Ladies & Gents and launched his own cocktail consultancy. Drinks on the barge will include a Blood Orange Margarita (agave and blood orange syrup), a negroni with a rhubarb twist and a Rum’n’Coke Old Fashioned.
