The Berkeley unveil The Garden restaurant - an alfresco haven in Knightsbridge

The Garden at The Berkeley in Knightsbridge

There's no doubt that restaurants with access to an outside area are going to have a better time of it than others as places reopen for business this weekend. So props to The Berkeley who not registered, 'ooh we have quite a decent outside space at the back of the hotel' but also 'why don't we do something brand new with it?'

To that end, they'll be opening an entirely new alfresco restaurant on Saturday. The Garden at The Berkeley will be what they say is "an intimate and informal Mediterranean-style alfresco restaurant". And frankly, one look at the photographs made us think we don't care what they serve up there, it looks SO gorgeous we just want to go. The space on Wilton Place, overlooking St Paul's Church, has been done up with lanterns, candles, olive trees and lavender and they have done a very good job of it.

Food-wise we're told that every guest will be welcomed with a dish of warm sourdough with confit garlic and charred vine tomatoes. After that, it's a series of dishes cooked on Green Egg barbecues. So you can expect:

  • T-bone steak with smoked shallot butter and chimichurri
  • Grilled sardines with lemon and rock salt
  • Roast cauliflower with smoked almond puree
  • Charred octopus with lemon and garlic saffron aioli

And if you want to keep the whole evening alfresco, you could start or end the night upstairs from The Garden at the hotel's Berkeley Bar which also has a rather nice terrace.
