Wahaca South Bank puts grasshoppers on the menu

grasshoppers wahacaIt may be one hell of a publicity stunt, but you've got to give Wahaca credit for coming up with its latest menu addition - grasshoppers. To raise awareness of sustainability, particularly around meat, founder Thomasina Miers has decided to put a dish containing the insects on the menu.

Chapulines fundido features fried grasshoppers as its main ingredient and is priced at £3.95.  Fried grasshoppers are pureed with softened shallots, garlic and smoky chipotle chillies to create a salsa, which is served with queso fundido, a mixture of gratinated mozzarella and cheddar cheese. They reckon it's just about perfect for scooping up with corn tortillas.

The grasshopper dish is on the menu for a month at Wahaca on the South Bank from Monday March 11th with customers being encouraged to tweet #ChapulinYES or #ChapulinNO to see if the dish survives its bush tucker trial here in London.

Strangely, we found our diary too packed to allow time to pop down and try it, but if do go - don't forget to Tweet us and tell us below what you thought of it.
