Piccadilly to close for Jubilee street party

Picadilly party[Updated 24/5/12 with more picnic food details]

The whole of Piccadilly from Piccadilly Circus to St James will close on Sunday 3rd June 2012 for the one of the biggest street parties of the Jubilee weekend. The Big Jubilee Lunch will see Londoners either bringing their own lunch to enjoy at trestle tables along the road, or buying food from stalls and shops along Piccadilly.

Supporting the event are Fortnum & Mason, The Ritz and The Wolseley. At the heart of the event will be a 500-seat table along the length of Piccadilly, where visitors can register for a place in advance online. Places will be timed with hour-long slots.

There'll be a Best of British tent hosted by Rocco Forte's Brown's Hotel, with traditional British games from hoopla to coconut shies and food ranging from scotch quails eggs and British asparagus with herb mayonnaise to jubilee chicken, Eccles cakes and strawberries & cream. The Cavendish will put on a hog roast as will Le Meridien.

Fortnum & Mason are going all out for the celebration. In store you can order a Fortnum & Mason Jubilee Picnic for 2 at £40 with smoked salmon sandwiches, Coronation Chicken salad and strawberry Eton Mess with biodegradable forks, spoons, knives and finger wipes. They'll also be running a Diamond Jubilee Champagne and Tea Bar where a Picnic Afternoon Tea for two with self-assembly cake stand, Tea, Sandwiches, Scones, Clotted Cream and Preserve, packed in a Fortnum’s Bag for Life, is £30. Alternatively, outside the store they'll be serving up Highgrove burgers at £7 a pop.
