Elezar sees the man behind Wild and Goodman opening a chophouse in a Mayfair crypt

Chophouses are back in vogue, it seems. We've just had the launch of Cloth Cornhill, which takes some of its influences from Simpson's Tavern, the classic chophouse that had been on its site before, and now we're about to get one in the centre of town. But this time it's a little different, as Elezar is being touted as an "Eastern European chophouse".

It's being opened by Misha Zelman, a name that's probably most recognisable as being behind Zelman Meats but also one of the people behind Goodman and Burger & Lobster.

Leading the kitchen here is Head Chef Erik Miotto, recently seen at Cycene and Akoko. His menu here kicks off with snacks like rye bread with a thick slice of bread and caviar (and caviar will be a big focus here). There will be pierogi (dumplings) for starters while the main menu is about grilled cuts of meat and fish. There will be tuna ribeye, Dingley Dell pork chop, Denver and Pichana steaks and all the mains will be priced at £28 - not bad for Mayfair. There will be bigger cuts if you fancy them, of course.

The place he's taking over has also had something of a chequered history. Elezar is opening in the crypt below St George's Church near Hanover Square. That was originally supposed to be the home of Brad Carter's London restaurant, which never saw the light of day, before being taken over by Aldo Zilli (which didn't last long at all). Can Zelman manage to make a success of this place? He already has form in big underground rooms with the nearby Beast, so we'll have to see.
