Every now and then, a new opening manages to happen under our radar, but this latest one really is a proper surprise. It turns out that Automat has quietly returned to Mayfair, opening just around the corner from Berkeley Square.
The original Automat was over on Dover Street, a location that's been turned very successfully into The Dover. That Automat was modelled on a traditional American diner, albeit with a more high-end Mayfair approach, and for a time was a big thing indeed.
This revived version has landed on Mount Street, and appears to be in the Tanner Krolle building. We had previously written that there was planning permission to create a British restaurant there, but it appears that things have changed quite significantly since then. One thing we're not sure of yet, despite actually walking straight past the building last week, is whether it's taken over that building or is part of the shop. A video we tracked down on Instagram suggests the latter.
The menu isn't available online yet, but their Instagram feed suggests that it will be a menu of burgers, lobster rolls, Caesar salads, pecan pies and more. However, the feel of the restaurant is very much classic Mayfair, much more The Dover-coded, with no clear diner references in the design.
We're expecting the full details about to opening to drop any minute now, so as soon as we get a little more information, we'll bring that to you too.
