If you've been wondering what's going on at the Duke of York on Downham Street (where the old Beef & Brew was) then let us enlighten you.
It's expected to reopen today under new management. Running the show now is Barworks - the folk behind Mare Street Market, The Well & Bucket and more. Hot Dinners spoke to the company's co-owner Marc Francis-Baum who told us that while in previous incarnations the place was more food-led, "we've turned it back into a pub - it's a lovely old boozer."
To that end, they've made the bar the central focus, moving in from its old position down the side of the room. And while their key offering is drink - they will be doing a small menu of pizzas and pasta - all around the £5 mark and, obviously, Sunday roasts.
On the menu you'll also find:
- Crisp fried pink fir potatoes & aioli
- Burrata, confit peppers & capers
- Parmesan crumbed chicken thigh in a soft bun with Caesar dressing
- Pappardelle - with either tomato sauce; pumpkin, cavolo nero, sage & hazelnut butter or beef shin ragu, rosemary & chilli
They have 17 beers on draught and the wine list includes English sparkling wine from Ridgeview, two English vermouths on tap and a shortish but very decent looking wine list.
The Barworks team are also working on the White Bear in St John Street in Smithfield, just across the road from St John restaurant. "We inherited this white box," says Marc, "but then we did some digging and found these old tiles and lovely brick walls so we're trying to get detail out of the pub as possible. There's not much room to do anything other than pizza and nibbles."
That's expected to open mid November.
