Jose Rubio-Guevara is the chef patron at Paladar - a much-loved Latin American restaurant that serves up a London take on food from central and South America. He’s agreed to share his favourite local places in Elephant and Castle with us.
Sticks and Ceviche
42 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6DR
Mercato Metropolitano has become a Mecca for street food and there is a really wide choice of stalls to eat from, depending on your mood. I love Sticks and Ceviche because it offers one of the best traditional ceviches in the area. Get there quickly, though, as Mercato will be closing down soon to make way for a massive Berkeley Homes development… Favourite dishes: Any of the ceviches; Robata-grilled pork belly
Kachori
12 Ash Ave, London SE17 1FR
This is one of the best new restaurants to open recently at Elephant Park, offering excellent North Indian cuisine in a relaxed upmarket setting. I’ve been several times and always love it – the dishes not only taste great but are beautifully presented - definitely a cut above your average curry house. Love the Jodhpur grilled chicken tikka and baby aubergine with tamarind.
Aroma de Cafe
91-95 Newington Butts, London SE1 6SF
This hidden gem inside the Tiendas del Sur shopping centre offers lovely traditional Colombian food – and being Colombian myself, it’s a real taste of home. It is nothing fancy, but just good food at great prices. They have different Colombian soups served daily with a main course to choose along with a drink – all for under £13. Favourite dishes: Bandeja Paisa - this is a huge plate of grilled steak, red beans, rice, chorizo, arepa, avocado, ripe plantain, fried egg and fried pork belly. Yum!
Theo’s
17-18 Elephant and Castle, London SE1 6TH
This is one of the best and most popular Italian restaurants at Elephant. It is usually busy and buzzy and right by the tube - so is a great place to drop by for a Neapolitan-style pizza or something more extravagant. They also have another branch down the road in Camberwell. Favourite dishes? The Aubergine Parmigiana; Pizza Fritta and Chestnut mushroom pizza.
Beza
8A Sayer St, London SE17 1FH
I love trying food from around the world – and Elephant & Castle has so many different cuisines and cultures to choose from. I had never had Ethiopian food before and I really enjoyed it at Beza. The décor is cool and authentic - and I didn’t miss the meat at this amazing vegan restaurant! Don’t miss the Ethiopian beer!
