Five years after it reopened after a long hiatus, The Light Bar in Shoreditch is about to enter its third iteration, with a brand new owner on board and - crucially - a rather interesting new executive chef.
Rob Star is the new owner of the well-known bar, and his takeover here quickly follows his opening of Firestarter restaurant in Liverpool Street, less than a mile away. He's also the man behind Electric Star Pubs. Which is kind of a neat fit, if you think about it, as The Light Bar used to be a Victorian power station.
What really prompted our attention though was the news that a new chef was in place. Jake Ayliffe was previously head chef at the always popular Rogues restaurant in Bethnal Green. He took charge at The Light Bar last year and is now running a huge restaurant on site, with room for 100 City diners to enjoy Ayliffe's own take on pub classics. If you're wondering what that means in practice, think chestnut and onion sausage rolls with HP sauce, whole piri piri poussin with red cabbage slaw and a sticky toffee pudding that comes with miso caramel and spiced cream cheese.
If you've loved coming here for brunch or Sunday lunch, both of those will continue. The place is also getting something of a design refresh with the centrepiece being an absolutely humongous rotating 10 foot wide disco ball chandelier hanging from the ceiling. There's also a new mezzanine floor above the bar and they're opening a third floor club space called The Timber Loft where they'll hold weekend day parties and club nights.
