We quickly became big fans of Kebab Queen, the counter restaurant below Le Bab in Covent Garden where everything's served to you on a heated countertop. It all sounds mad, but it works really, really well.
They're now changing things up for the next few months, bringing in a guest chef to run the counter (while chef Manu Canales takes a break). It's MasterChef The Professionals finalist Philli Armitage-Mattin, previously at two-Michelin-starred Den in Tokyo, Haku in Hong Kong and whose previous residency was at Number One Park Lane.
She'll be serving a menu direct onto the countertop that's inspired by her travels around Asia and that includes:
- Crab Chawamushi, Peas, XO Sauce
- Chinese BBQ Lamb, Sichuan Lamb Skewer with Aubergine, Sesame Soy Sauce, Chiu Chow Chilli Oil
- Ayam Bakar Stuffed Chicken Wing with Chicken Fat Rice, Sambal Matah, Chicken Skin Crumb
- Brown Butter Cake, Pine Nut Purée, Strawberry Sansho Cheong, Whey Ice Cream, PickledStrawberries
She'll be in charge for three months and as for the innovative approach, said: “For me, it’s like a blank canvas where I can be as creative as possible, express my personal cooking style to its truest, and push my cooking to new levels." So if you haven't yet made a trip to Kebab Queen, this definitely sounds worth a look.
