It's not easy finding the perfect local in London. You have to kiss a lot of frogs (or drink a lot of duff pints) before you discover the one for you. So imagine the dismay for South Londoners to read yesterday that one of their favourite pubs is closing.
The Palmerston in East Dulwich took everyone by surprise when it posted on Instagram to say that they'd be closing up shop in June.
"It is with a heavy heart to all our customers friends and supporters over the last 15yrs June 3rd will be our last day of The Palmerston as we know it. We have reached the end of our lease and unfortunately we are not being offered a new one. Please come say hi before we go."
The news was met with pretty much universal disapproval from its many, many fans.
"This is incredibly sad news," was the reaction from nearby pub The Camberwell Arms. Scott Collins, MD at MEATliquor was more direct: "This has fucking ruined my day." He wasn't the only one in the restaurant trade to feel that way. "The heart of Sunday roast in lordship lane has ended," said chef James Cochran.
Many were sceptical of the landlord's intentions:
And it must be particularly gutting, not to say a total shock to the pub itself which built a new kitchen in the summer.
