Taste of London Winter 2014 opens at Tobacco Dock

taste-mainTaste of London’s Winter 2014 extravaganza kicked off last night at Tobacco Dock in East London. The huge venue was fully festive with dozens of Christmas trees and fairy lights galore, and live music playing throughout the night.

Of the restaurants showcasing small samples of their best dishes, the best we tried were:

  • Barbecoa’s Ultimate Burger, served with secret sauce and gruyere which was deliciously juicy
  • Ember Yard’s truffled mac and cheese which was rich and decadent.  We could have easily devoured at least two more portions.
  • Assado’s belly of organic Welsh pedigree pork, slow cooked Goan style and served on a hot red chilli risotto. The chilli and wholesome risotto made for the perfect winter warmer

There are hundreds of stalls to make your way around, and it can become a bit of a maze, so dig out your map and navigate your way to the Meringue Girls stand for the prettiest pastel-coloured treats, and the Heck stand for the most delicious sausages you’ll ever try (And you can grab four packs for a tenner…)

When you enter the event you’ll be given a card that you can top up with the event’s own currency – Crowns. Most of the restaurants only accept Crowns, and don’t take cash or card, so be aware of that when you go in, as although there are a few ATMs, the queues are very long. Restaurants aside, there are a lot of independent stalls and retailers that don’t accept Crowns, making for a rather confusing system.

Taste of London Winter is on at Tobacco Dock until Sunday 23 November 2014.
