Ramsay gains a star as Britain Guide 2011 celebrates most Michelin stars ever

All the speculation in the world couldn't persuade Michelin UK to reveal who'd got a Michelin star this year ahead of today's announcement. So we were all gathered at Michelin House to find out which chefs had managed to win lose, or hold on to their precious stars.

It's been a great year for Britain in general with 143 starred restaurants in the UK and Ireland - more than there's ever been. London in particular did well with 53 Michelin-starred restaurants, 37% of the total.

The biggest winner was Helene Darroze at The Connaught who moved up from one to two stars. It was also a good year for Gordon Ramsay who picked up a star for Petrus.

There were also seven restaurants in London celebrating their first Michelin star:

  • Kitchen W8
  • Petersham Nurseries Cafe
  • Viajante
  • Galvin La Chapelle
  • Petrus
  • William Drabble at Seven Park Place
  • Gauthier Soho

It's another year of disappointment for Marcus Wareing who is still chasing his third star.

In addition to the stars, London has a few new Bib Gourmands - which is awarded to restaurants who offer good food at moderate prices. They are as follows:

  • Polpo
  • Trullo
  • 28-50
  • Iberica
  • Canton Arms
  • Morito
  • Zucca
  • Goldfish City
  • Charlotte's Bistro
  • Simply Thai in Richmond
  • Galvin Cafe á Vin
