Six years ago we ran a news story about the move of top pub landlord Oisin Rogers, who was taking over The Guinea Grill in Mayfair. In the intervening years, Rogers has turned the Bruton Place pub into one of the best known drinking holes and steak restaurants in London. But, like all good things, this has come to an end and Oisin announced yesterday morning on Twitter that it was his final day at the pub.
As you might imagine, no-one leaves a pub like The Guinea without having some sort of future plans and Rogers certainly has them, it's just that he can't talk about them yet. What he would tell us, when Hot Dinners spoke to him yesterday was: "I plan to always be a landlord and at the helm of somewhere great. I've got reasonably good at restaurants now, so my hope and intention is to open an large pub and restaurant in central London next year."
"I'm leaving The Guinea in the most perfect shape it can be in. It's incredibly successful and it's now got a brilliant team ready to take over."
So why has he decided that now's the time to go it alone? "I'm at the age where if I was to stay longer, it would be too late to do my own thing. It's better to do it now when the iron is hot and the market is right."
We'll bring you the news of Oisin's new place when we hear more.
