What: L’Ami Malo
In a nutshell: Crepes and galettes from northern France
Summing it all up: A modern crêperie is coming to Spitalfields, and you’ll be able to take your pick of toppings, or head to the Le Moulin speakeasy in the back where staff will be on hand to mix you up calvados cocktails...
The lowdown
Here’s something a little different amid all the barbecue, ramen and sharing plates - a traditional French crêperie with a modern twist is coming to Spitalfields’ historic Artillery Passage.
L’Ami Malo will be cooking up their own take on the classic Breton delicacy including their signature dish, Bayonne ham with Comté cheese, tomato tartare and roast hazelnuts. They’ll also be experimenting with some Asian influences, and serving the galettes sliced up like maki rolls.
Other galettes on offer will be topped with:
- Confit duck leg with caramelised pear and red wine jus
- Morteau sausage, leek fondue, Jersey Royal New Potatoes and French mustard
- Hepburns smoked ham, duck egg, maple cured bacon and Comté cheese
For dessert, you can get classic lemon and sugar, apple compote, or even butter sauce and salted caramel.
If you’re after a drink, head to the Le Moulin speakeasy in the back where staff will be mixing up Pommeau Sprizes with apple juice, cider and calvados - yes please. Or if that sounds a bit too fiery for you, there’ll be a range of craft ciders from the region, and French wines including orange and organic bottles.
The venture is headed up by French duo Emilien Lesourd and Vincent Couvreur, who's worked together with head chef Williams Guillemot to create a restaurant inspired by the rather lovely town of St Malo in Brittany.
Plus, a quick note to the gluten-avoiders among us. As is tradition, L’Ami Malo uses buckwheat flour to make their galettes, which means they're all gluten-free by default.
