Also renowned for their steaks, excellent wine list and service, Hawksmoor is a reassuring choice, and this branch is particularly suited to the business crowd, with breakfast meetings well-catered for. There’s also a 22-person private dining room, complete with audio-visual equipment, for presentations with exceptional catering.

Set in an atmospheric basement of a Grade-II-listed building, the City outlet of Blacklock, a chophouse renowned for the quality of its grass-fed meat, is where carnivores can indulge in the likes of smoked maple-glazed bacon chops or even pig’s head on toast.

Set within Camden's Hawley Wharf food hall, this affordable Middle-Eastern-inspired steakhouse describes itself as being halfway between Tel Aviv and New York. Run by two Israeli chefs Shiri Kraus and Amir Batatus, who previously worked at The Palomar and The Barbary, the kitchen sources grass-fed, free-range and traceable beef and cooks it on an open fire. Its signature dish is an onglet steak with a side of herbs on the plate, which is theatrically torched right in front of you.

The original Goodman and perhaps our favourite. When this superlative steak restaurant opened, it was hard to find a decent steak in London. That's all changed now - but Goodman remains a top place to either treat yourself or splash the company credit card at.

Wolfgang Puck made his fortune serving gourmet pizzas to Hollywood's elite. It's currently his only European restaurant - part of the Dorchester Collection. Steaks are the focus here as well as plenty of interesting salads for the stars to push around their plates.

From the team at Caprice Holdings, this 100-seat steak restaurant in the heart of Mayfair has been a celebrity haunt since Day 1. It has a focus on rare breeds and game, while also offering a collection of lighter dishes. Designed by Martin Brudnizki, it's a popular spot and great for brunch.

The original Hawksmoor, and for many the best. Known as the group that transformed steaks in British restaurants forever for the better, this is a perfect place to come to for a meat-fest. And expect some cracking cocktails too - head to the bar downstairs for those and extra snacks not on the main menu.

This is the Shoreditch outpost of the Blacklock group - which has become famous for its piles of chops, cooked over fire. It's also great value for money - and that includes the cocktails. This East London branch also has a large bar area.

Located in the old Watney-Combe brewery, complete with original vaulted brick ceiling, this Hawskmoor restaurant looks as though it's been down this narrow Covent Garden street forever. As with all their restaurants, it's the place to go for an excellent steak and there's a pretty big bar here too if you fancy popping in for one of their renowned cocktails.

There's a wealth of talent behind this modern grill room on Park Lane - with Hawksmoor's Richard Turner and wine writer Fiona Beckett on the dream team. Make sure you kick off with a cocktail, they're particularly inventive.

Flat Iron have an avid following amongst Londoners, with their signature flat iron steaks being one of the best deals in town. This is their King's Cross location where they serve up the usual flat-iron steaks as well as some special cuts. And all for a much cheaper price than you'd normally pay at a steakhouse.

Hawksmoor has grown considerably since they first started in Spitalfields - reaching here in Knightsbridge and beyond. At the subterranean Knightsbridge location, you can get all the best steaks and cocktails that they're known for - and some great seafood dishes too.

London's steak and cocktail masters chose this as their first restaurant south of the river and - like all the others - it's rather beautiful, taking over an old warehouse. As ever be quick if you want a certain cut of steak - when they're gone, they're gone.
Level 32, The Shard, 31 St Thomas Street, London SE1 9RY
This restaurant from Rainer Becker and Arjun Waney is on the 32nd floor of The Shard, and focuses on food from a rotisserie and grill (with a lounge bar also attached). It has British and European ingredients and influences, but is mainly be inspired by New York grills, as well as serving slow roasting joints and wood-fired breads and pizzas. And it has a damned fine view.
ME by Melia Hotel, 336-337 The Strand, WC2R 1HA
This new hotel designed by (Norman) Foster + Partners takes over the old BBC Marconi building. As well as a rooftop bar offering great views of London, it's the first non-US outpost of New York steakhouse STK, which has taken over the ground floor restaurant. STK aims to be a more "female friendly" steakhouse, with an emphasis on lighter meals.

Part of the Old Bengal Warehouse dating from 1771, the New Street Grill focuses on steaks and showcases British produce.
86 Park Lane, London W1K 7TL
Proving that the Americans really do know their steak, this restaurant features a whopping 32 ounce challenge dish called The Tomahawk, There's also a Bourbon Bar and terrace for alfresco dining.
52 Tanner Street, London SE1 3PH
Constancia is the latest steakhouse to hit London, and the reviewers seem to be impressed with this Argentine Grill (aka "parilla"). An independent restaurant, set up by two brothers, this has more individuality than the chains, and is highly recommended to anyone looking for a good steak south of the river.
