Coming from the same group that opened Sumi and Endo at the Rotunda, this is a wood fire concept in Mayfair. The open kitchen is dominated with a huge wood grill, with the counter right in front of that being the place to be. The menu features dishes cooked over fire using a number of methods and even some of the cocktails are set on fire.

Kai Mayfair

65 South Audley Street, London W1K 2QU

This Chinese restaurant grabbed a Michelin star in the 2009 Guide and is run by Malaysian restaurateur Bernard Yeoh. They serve what they call "Liberated Chinese Cooking" influenced but not restricted by classic Chinese cooking.

Run by chef Pascal Aussignac, this Michelin-starred French restaurant (it's now held a star for over 20 years) focuses on the cuisine of the southwest of France, with opulent tasting menus available. Despite the focus on meat, there's real attention too given to their vegetarian and vegan offering. (Closing 28 March)

The original Barrafina moved from its Frith Street location to take up pride of place beside (and a chunk out of) Quo Vadis. This is the Spanish tapas brand's main location in Soho and features some of the best Spanish food in London, as well as great counter action.

Hakkasan Mayfair

17 Bruton Street, London W1J 6QB

Hakkasan Mayfair is the second site of the very successful Chinese restaurant originally set up by Alan Yau. The new location is on Bruton Street and while it features a lot of the old favourites from Hakkasan on Hanway Place, the team created some new signature dishes for the Mayfair site. It's very much a celeb hangout too.

Seven Park Place

St. James's Hotel and Club, 7-8 Park Place, St. James's, SW1A 1LS London

William Drabble moved from Aubergine to head up this self-styled 'intimate' restaurant at the St James's Hotel and Club. The menu may be 'modern-French' but the provenance of the food is all British. The dining room has just had a major refurb from Russell Sage Studios, giving it a new bar area and extended dining room.

Core by Clare Smyth

92 Kensington Park Rd, London W11 2PN

Clare Smyth once led Gordon Ramsay's flagship London restaurant before going onto even bigger things and earning three Michelin stars here at Core. Expect fine dining (but in a relaxed atmosphere) with signature dishes like the Potato and Roe or the Core Apple not to be missed. If you can't get a reservation, the bar Whiskey and Seaweed (which also has bar snacks) is well worth a visit in itself.

Sketch - Lecture Room & Library

9 Conduit Street, London W1S 2XG

Pierre Gagnaire's uber chic Mayfair restaurant is certainly for special occasions - it's one of the most expensive meals in town. There are multiple dining rooms within the building, all with very different looks and menus but it's the Lecture Room & Library alone which holds three stars. There are also incredibly instagrammable loos.

The Ledbury

127 Ledbury Road, Notting Hill, London W11 2AQ

One of London's legendary restaurants and one that's often raved about by foodies as among the very best in town. Fronted by Brett Graham, it had a complete revamp in 2022, returning with a glammed-up redesign and perhaps something of a more high-end feel than before. That change was certainly for the better as it earned the restaurant its third Michelin star.

Of all his restaurants the world over, this is Gordon Ramsay's flagship restaurant, based on Hospital Road. It's a much more high-end, fine dining restaurant than anything else in his empire and has retained its three-Michelin-starred status for years. Right now, Kim Ratcharoen is the woman running the kitchen here but you might see Gordon popping in from time to time.

Hélène Darroze at The Connaught

The Connaught, Carlos Place, Mayfair, London W1K 2AL

One of the main restaurants at prestigious London hotel The Connaught, this is run by French chef Hélène Darroze. Expect high-end French dining that has won the restaurant three Michelin stars. It's an incredibly personalised experience with the customer picking their favourite ingredients and the menu being created from there. Make sure to finish with the signature baba.

Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester

The Dorchester, Park Lane, London W1K 1QA

Alain Ducasse is one of France's most celebrated chefs and he's done pretty well over here too. This restaurant at The Dorchester hotel, serving up fine French food, is features Chef Patron Jean-Philippe Blondet, as the man interpreting Ducasse for the London scene. There's a distinct effort for dishes here to be lighter than the normal rich Michelin fare.

Bonheur by Matt Abé

43 Upper Brook Street, London W1K 7QR

Previously head chef at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Matt Abé has taken over the space that once was home to Le Gavroche. Thoroughly updating it for the 21st Century, he's offering a refined series of tasting menus here, with a great attention to detail in all the dishes on offer.

5 Savile Row, London W1S 3PB

This is Jason Atherton's flagship restaurant on Savile Row, where he’s hoping for three-star Michelin recognition. Split across two floors, which you move between over the course of the meal, this is unlike anything in town. Chef Spencer Metzer (ex-The Ritz) is the man in the kitchen making the magic happen - expect culinary fireworks across a multi-course tasting menu.

Brooklands

The Peninsula, 1 Grosvenor Pl, London SW1X 7HJ

Brooklands is the rooftop restaurant at The Peninsula London run by the larger-than-life French chef Claude Bosi. The restaurant boasts a showstopper room with a Concorde replica on the ceiling, while the food aims for a journey across the British Isles using sustainably sourced ingredients. There's also a large terrace and an equally impressive cocktail bar with views across London.

Alex Dilling (previously at The Greenhouse) is in charge of the main restaurant at Hotel Cafe Royal. He's only serving 34 diners and those lucky few get an exemplary tasting menu that's all based around a contemporary take on French cuisine. This gives the hotel the destination restaurant that such an iconic London building truly deserved.

Humble Chicken

54 Frith St, Soho, London W1D 4SL

This is top chef Angelo Sato's Soho restaurant and while it started life as a more casual affair that was all about chicken, it's now changed into a much broader omakase offering that's described as serving a "Japanese-inspired 8-course tasting menu with a European accent." If you love counter dining, this is the place for you.

36 Snowsfields, Bermondsey, London SE1 3SU

Trivet is a joint collaboration between chef Jonny Lake and master sommelier Isa Bal, both alumni of Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck. Here you can expect an informal take on fine dining with a truly epic wine list that covers the globe. The attached wine bar is worth checking out on Mondays where they open special bottles and serve light bites.

Town Hall Hotel, Patriot Square, London E2 9NF

Rafael Cagali is the chef who teamed up with Singaporean hotelier Peng Loh for this Brazilian/South American and Italian influenced restaurant. It's the kind of international melting pot story that makes London's restaurant scene so great. Michelin clearly agree - they gave it a star in its first year. Tasting menus can sometimes be an ordeal, but here there's a great deal of humour, making a trip to Bethnal Green to try Da Terra's inspired dishes a must.

Ikoyi

180 Strand, Temple, London WC2R 1EA

This restaurant comes from Iré Hassan-Odukale (front of house) and Jeremy Chan (Head Chef) and features a spice-based cuisine that's electrified reviewers (and diners) since opening. Originally in St James, they're now in a much bigger building near Temple.

The Sethi family's concept of taking a colonial gymkhana club theme and serving modern Indian food combined with British ingredients, with a focus on the tandoor oven and sigri charcoal grill was an instant hit. It's always packed with A-listers and foodies alike.

Restaurant Story

201 Tooley Street, London SE1 2UE

Tom Sellers previously worked with the likes of Rene Redzepi at Noma, Adam Byatt and Thomas Keller before making his own name with the Michelin-starred Restaurant Story. It's led by a tasting menu that changes by the seasons while still keeping in a few signatures, like his beef dripping candle. After a major refurb, an entire new floor was added to the building adding a chef's table with an impressive view and terrace.

This two-Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant is one of the city’s best. In a pared-back room, the menu travels the broad spectrum of Chinese cooking and has a lunchtime dim sum menu that's absolutely worth crossing town for.

Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street, London EC1V 9LT

One of the best restaurants in town and one of the few to have made it into the World's 50 Best list, The Clove Club is now a London institution, on the must-try lists of all good gastro tourists. Head into the main restaurant for a regularly changing tasting menu by Isaac McHale, which is at the heart of things here.

Kitchen Table is the high-end counter dining restaurant from James Knappett and Sandia Chang. The whole experience begins and ends in the bar, but once in the main room you're seated around the open kitchen watching and interacting with the chefs while they create a spectacular tasting menu for you.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel, 66 Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7LA

Heston's only London gaff is still hugely popular. The dishes that captured everyone's attention when it opened - the Meat Fruit (chicken liver parfait shaped like a mandarin) and the Tipsy Cake are still on the menu and are must-order dishes if you haven't got round to trying them yet. Keep an eye out for A-list diners, the hotel is a well-known celebrity haunt. 

The Ritz

150 Piccadilly, London W1J 9BR

One of London’s most opulent dining rooms, the food here by the well-respected executive chef John Williams MBE more than matches its surroundings. Here is a restaurant where you can expect a lot of synchronised dome lifting and exquisite service. For sheer theatricality, order the crepes Suzette, which are finished off in front of you.

Labombe by Trivet

19 Old Park Ln, London W1K 1LB

A sibling restaurant to Michelin-starred Trivet, this sees co-founders Chef Jonny Lake and Master Sommelier Isa Bal take the wine-forward creation that they started down in Bermondsey and transfer it to Park Lane where the old Met Bar used to be. As you might imagine, the wine offering is exceptional and the menu is grill-focused.

Michael Caines at The Stafford

16-18 St James's Pl, London SW1A 1NJ

After winning a star at Lympstone Manor, Michael Caines has done the same for his first London restaurant. Set inside The Stafford hotel, the menu here celebrates the best of British produce and you'll also find quite a few of his signature dishes from Lympstone Manor.
