Bar Notes: Kwant

kwant bar london review

Where is it? On Heddon Street, underneath Momo

Who's in charge? Running things here is Eric Lorincz who previously headed up the American Bar at The Savoy which he took to the top slot in the World's Best Bars list.

What's the vibe? Think subtle tropical meets clubby drawing room - so the chairs are studded Chesterfields while the plants and decor are a bit tiki.

Why is it worth trying? Well, not only has Kwant just reopened after lockdown, but it's done so with an impressive bar accolade under its belt. It just won Best New International Cocktail Bar at the 2020 Spirited Awards - a hugely competitive and prestigious competition, beating off entries from as far afield as Melbourne and Buenos Aires.

What's on the drinks menu? Expect to find a mix of original cocktails, twists on classics and - for the deep pocketed - vintage cocktails made with very old spirits like the £87 negroni made with Cinzano Torino from 1970s stirred with 1960s Campari. Martinis come either as a (very well made) classic or there's a Sunflower version with Jerusalem artichokes.

We particularly enjoyed our Hacienda (£14.50) made with Patron Silver Tequila shaken with Cocchi Rosa, lacto fermented purple carrot, Tio Pepe Fino Sherry, Vida Mezcal, agave nectar and freshly squeezed lime juice.

What about bar food? The menu here - as with Momo upstairs and Mo Diner next door - has been crafted by top chef Eric Chavot. It's pricey, but delicious - we tried the Patatas Alhambra (£4.50) with mojo verde, saffron aioli and spring onion and the lamb kofa (£6.50).
