Test Driving Honey & Co Daily - the team has another hit (and lots of cake)

The large corner frontage of Honey & Co Daily. That's the deli that you can see at the front.

Is it a new Honey & Co?

Yes and no. This is the fourth opening from the Honey & Co team, who also run Honey & Co, Honey & Smoke and the Honey & Spice shop. All the sites are fairly close to each other, in either Fitzrovia or Bloomsbury but they are also all quite distinct.

And where is Honey & Co Daily?

You'll find it just steps off of Tottenham Court Road, a couple of minutes walk from Goodge Street station. It's on the same road as Café Deco, so this short street is now blessed with two excellent places to eat.

What marks this one out from the others in the group?

Honey & Co Daily is really a two-in-one affair. Up front, you'll find their deli/cafe, which itself is a little larger than the whole of their Honey & Spice shop (with an eat-in option that the Fitzrovia shop doesn't have). Here you can pick up sandwiches and cakes, like their amazing babkas, and lots more. They also sell cookies, including the chocolate and pistachio ones that rank high in our personal list of London's best cookies.

The deli - even if you're not stopping to eat, it's well worth popping in to have a look at this.

But there's more to it than the shop?

It's a big old building (it used to be a Co-op) and behind the deli you'll find a large dining space. That's more of a cafe during the day, and then becomes a fully-fledged restaurant at night. The evening menu is relatively new - and that's what we were there to try.

So what kind of food can we expect?

If you're new to Honey & Co, the people behind it are the husband and wife team of Itamar Srulovich and Sarit Packer. They launched the original Honey & Co as a Middle-Eastern-inspired restaurant which quickly became one of London's very best places to eat. The food here at Daily continues to use that inspiration with a regularly-changing menu (including a few signature Honey & Co hits along the way).

The menu can either be had a-la-carte (starters £14, mains £25, desserts £10.50) or as a set menu picking something from each section (starter and main is £37, add dessert for a total of £45) - so you do save a little if you go for more than one dish. On top of that, there are various add-ons which are priced individually. As with all the Honey & Co restaurants, all the portions are quite generous.

To give you an idea of how all that pans out - here's what we had:

roomHummus with marinated chickpeas and pitta (£11.50) - their hummus and pitta remains some of the best in town so this is a great place to start.

roomSumac and pomegranate cured salmon, chive sour cream, radish and pickles (starter)

roomTunisian stack - preserved lemon and harissa tuna, potatoes, red pepper and poached egg (starter) - Almost like having a brunch dish in the evening, this is well worth having.

roomShin of beef cooked with carrots, quince and khmeli suneli (main course) - This is huge and adding the baker's potatoes is probably enough for two to share. There's a real hit of spicy heat in this dish too, which elevates it considerably.

roomGlazed aubergine steak with red pepper and pumpkin seed puree, burnt hispi cabbage (main course) - the deep sweet crisp to the aubergine is excellent.

roomBaker's potatotes, baked in olive oil, harissa and feta (add on for £6.50). This is a little heavy (so this and the beef shin for one may be too much) but ultimately it's a mighty add-on and a must-have for the table.

How about dessert?

At first glance, it appears as if there are only two options for dessert on the menu. The first of these is a signature Honey & Co dish, and if you haven't had the chance to try it yet this should be your first go-to:

cheesecakeThe Honey & Co cheesecake - cold honey and feta cheesecake, with almonds and blueberries on kadaif pastry - one of London's best cheesecakes.

As for the second choice - that's something you can also get from the cake counter up front. And that's where the options increase dramatically. For dessert, you can wander up to the cake counter and choose anything from there to finish up with. So if you fancy ending with a white chocolate babka, go ahead. It's an option which really adds something unique to this Honey & Co outpost.

sliceIn the end, we opted for this - a chocolate pecan slice with candied orange

Anything else worth mentioning?

Things change a significant amount during the day. In the basement is their bakery, so this Honey & Co outpost supplies the bread for their other locations but it also means there are more options for bread, cakes and sandwiches here. Sandwiches include a daily bureka served with grated tomatoes, pickles, tahini and boiled egg, while some dishes from the evening menu are available a la carte, alongside their shakshuka.

Overall thoughts

Honey & Co are yet to put a foot wrong and the mini-empire they've established across Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury continues to deliver. Each outpost offers something a little unique and Honey & Co Daily aptly mixes an excellent (and generous) evening menu with a deli like no other. head along to either of these and you definitely won't be disappointed.
