Locally focused, globally flavoured: Here arrives in Crouch End

 herefood

What: Here

In a nutshell: Brunches, lunches and dinners with international flavours.

Summing it all up: Global flavours, local ingredients, vegan and gluten-free options, and a separate brunch menu means that Here’s got all the makings of a perfect Crouch End neighbourhood joint.

The low-down

Continuing the trend of restaurants outside London setting up in the city, like Brighton's The Coal Shed, now Berkhamsted restaurant company Here has opened its doors in north London’s well-to-do Crouch End.

They've taken over a little spot that’s previously been both a music warehouse and a butchers, on a street lined with cosy cafes and eating establishments. It follows then, that their whole vibe is to keep things firmly focused on local(ish), sustainable food - foraged veg from Martin Denny in King’s Lynn, beer from Beavertown Brewery in Tottenham and fish smoked in the restaurant, but caught in Cornwall.

The (very sizable) menu very much sings from seasonal hymn sheet, with ingredients like purple sprouting broccoli with quinoa puffed wild rice, charred cauliflower with tahini yoghurt or rutabaga root veg curry.

Some of the other plates that have caught our eye so far include:

  • Sobrasada sausage, sourdough, mel de cana molasses
  • Soul Sandwich with a fried egg, topped with crispy buttermilk chicken on HERE Nigella flatbread
  • HERE Charcuterie selection, quince paste, urban cheese du jour, pickles, toast
  • Dexter beef tartare, smoked anchovy, wasabi sour cream, toast
  • What the Duck burger with raclette, kimchi, confit leg cigar skewer and papaya salsa

Dishes will be tapas-sized, so you’ll be encouraged to order at least two per person. And if you’ve still got room after, we’re seriously liking the look of the desserts - stout ice cream affogato, buttermilk sorbet, banana bread with toasted yeast, or traditional Bengali sweet Bhapa Doi.

If you’re heading down in the day time, there’ll be a lighter menu on option, including salads and burgers, plus a heavy focus on brunch dishes - veggie and meaty fry ups, eggs galore, an “on toast” section, and best of all, plus ricotta hotcakes with sweet toppings like bananas, bacon and nutella.

With Christmas just around the corner, we can’t fail to mention their festive menu which is full of interesting takes on seasonal classics, like venison haunch spiced with ras el hanout, onglet carpaccio with quince, and hake with Japanese wakame seaweed.
