A Hot Dinners Exclusive - updated 22/3/17 with booking details

What: Radici

In a nutshell: Southern Italian cooking in Islington

Summing it all up: A new Italian trattoria with a terrace and wine room is arriving on Almedia Street, bringing with it lots of traditional south Italian dishes, as well as more laid back meals like pizzas, charcuterie and cheeses.

The low-down

Islington is set to be the home of a new southern Italian restaurant by the name of Radici, a new venture from Francesco Mazzei, of Mayfair's Sartoria.

The trattoria, which is backed by restaurant mavens D&D, will live on upmarket Almeida Street (taking over the site of their Almeida restaurant) and will be serving dishes inspired by the Mazzei's background of southern Italy. Diners can expect lots of deep flavours, rich tomato sauces, salty meat and smokey veg inspired by sundrenched regions like Campania, Sicily and Sardinia.

Some of the menu items on offer will include:

  • Umido di Baccala (salt cod with potatoes, tomato sauce, onions, capers and black olives)
  • Ferrazzuoli (eggless pasta with southern Italian lamb, pork and beef ragu)
  • Involtino di fegato (calf liver stuffed with pancetta, garlic and sage, served with smoked potato mash)

For those looking for something a bit more casual, there'll also be pizzas baked in a traditional wood oven, as well as a range of charcuterie and cheeses. And if you head down on Sundays, you'll be able to avail of a special feasting menu - good for big groups (or large Italian families.)

As Mazzei explains: “With Radici, I am so excited to bring the food of my childhood to my London home. I hope that this relaxed neighbourhood restaurant will soon become a part of the local community and a go-to venue for authentic southern Italian food in London”.

We're huge fans of his food at Sartoria so, frankly, we can't wait for this opening.
