Finding good sushi to go in London isn't the easiest thing in the world, but there are shining examples to be found across the city. We've done the research for the next time you get a craving for a sushi set that's really special.
Sushi Noya
King's Cross - Unit 27 The Circle, St Pancras Station, London N1C 4QL
Having taken over the old Yo Sushi spot in St Pancras, Sushi Noya is a distinct enhancement of the station’s sushi options. The first thing you notice is the open kitchen with all the sushi being prepped in front of you, rather than in some dark kitchen in Zone 6. The basic sushi sets all look great, but it’s the specials like the teriyaki eel nigiri and range of onigiri that make this place stand out from the crowd.
Hase-ya
Ealing - 10 S Ealing Rd, London W5 4QA
Chef Susumu Hasegawa started this venture as a street food stall with various residencies and pop-ups, but since opening in Ealing (handily right next to Tetote Factory bakery), it has built up an insanely loyal following. Donburi bowls and nigiri sets are what you want to aim for, although everything you get here will be great. It’s a bugger to get to, if you’re not in West London, but them’s the breaks if you want good sushi.
LOH Japandi
City of London - 228 Bishopsgate, London EC2M 4QD
This Bishopsgate love child of Japanese and Scandinavian food is one of our favourite places to grab interesting sushi in the City. They say they blend "modern Japanese flavours with Scandinavian aesthetics". What that means in practice is a very unclassical approach to sushi, so you'll find salmon gravlax nigiri and sashimi on the menu, for example. Their vegan options are particularly inventive, with pink soy wrapped maki and more on offer.
Sushi Shop
Battersea, Hampstead, Marylebone, Notting Hill, South Kensington
Originating in France and with a mix of Japanese and Californian-inspired sushi, Sushi Shop has one of the most aesthetically pleasing array of sushi to go on offer in London. They've also built up a reputation for interesting collaborations - recent boxes have included teaming up with top chefs Albert Adria, Anne Sophie Pic and Mory Sacko. At the time of writing they had a South American selection which included a Buenos Aires nigiri with yellowtail, chilli and chimichurri sauce to give you an idea of what to expect. Look out too for sushi options featuring their new KENKO sushi rice which is made using lower levels of sugar and salt.
Sushi Joy
Chinatown - 15A Little Newport St, London WC2H 7JJ
This new hole-in-the-wall sushi shack in Chinatown launched earlier this summer and already has something of a viral Chinatown sensation feel to it. There’s a playful quality to the sushi, so the fried ebi nigiri features an enormous tempura prawn on top, while the tamagoyaki (omelette) is lightly grilled, which is a nice touch. It’s very reasonably priced, particularly for central London, and the crispy sushi tacos also look really good.
Sushi Show
Angel and Shoreditch
Owner Kaz Tateishi is the secret to Sushi Show’s success - he has more than 25 years of experience working in Billingsgate fish market, so you know that the freshness of the fish here will be absolutely top notch. The Angel branch is tucked away in Camden Passage like something of a badly-kept secret, while the Shoreditch spot is a newer venture. Both do great sushi sets, but look to their specials board if you want the best sashimi on offer on any given day.
Notting Hill Fish Shop
Notting Hill - 287-289 Westbourne Grove, London W11 2QA
Sibling venture to Dorian and Eel Sushi, as well as being the venue for the much-covered on social Tuna Fight Club, the Notting Hill Fish Shop does amazing sushi to go, as you might imagine. The Mediterranean bluefin tuna is particularly good whether you’re going for akami, chutoro or otoro. There’s also the option to give your nigiri to go a luxe touch with the addition of N25 caviar or truffle.
Atariya
Acton - 7 Station Parade, West Acton, London W3 0DS
Atariya have shops dotted across London as well as a couple of restaurants in Swiss Cottage and Golders Green, but it’s the West Acton one that we reckon does the best takeaway sushi. The fishmonger counter takes pride of place here and the sashimi is amazing. They also do great platters if you’re having a party.
