It's all change at one of Soho's longstanding Thai restaurants Patara, which has undergone a full 21st-century reimagining and emerged as Platapian. The new look and menu is the result of second-generation restaurateur Nam Parama Raiva taking over the reins from her aunt Khun Patara Sila-On, who launched the Patara group with head chef Phayom Phimkrua three decades ago.
Twenty years after it opened its doors on Greek Street, the Patara branch in Soho is now Platapian with a menu that not only draws in the family's own recipes but also looks to both the north and south of Thailand for culinary inspiration.
"I've had the privilege of working with my family," says Nam of Parama Raiva of her new project, "diving into our culinary history and rediscovering recipes that have been passed down over the generations, and with my husband, bringing our shared vision to life through a space that feels truly like home."
And there's a lot to like on the new menu from the snacks of crispy chicken skin with garlic and mains of beef short ribs in five spice ‘paloh’ and salted egg yolk and claypot rice with jumbo crab and crispy lard.
Puddings have also had a full makeover with pandan crème brûlée and crispy Thai roll crêpes on offer.
As for the drinks, you'll find us checking out cocktails like the tom yum-tini made with Finlandia vodka and bird’s eye chilli and the Pak Praew Margarita with tequila, pak praew and palm sugar.
