New West African restaurant Shakara opened quietly just before Christmas, but it has some impressive names behind the scenes. In the kitchen is Victor Okunowo, previously from Talking Drum and a semifinalist of MasterChef: The Professionals. He's been helped with his initial menu by Ayo Adeyemi, formerly of Akoko, who was involved as a consultant.
Taking over the space that was Indian restaurant Ooty, the place has had a full overhaul by Red Deer (the team behind St John Marylebone and Arcade) for a design that's inspired by West Africa. That's where the menu gets inspiration from too, specifically looking at Nigeria, Ghana and The Gambia, with dishes that include:
- Peppered goat, smoked marrow croquettes
- Stuffed jerk chicken wings, smoked pineapple, spring onion
- Native blue lobster, peppersoup bisque, tagliatelle
- Dry-aged hereford beef, yaji, piperade, peppercorn uda jus
Built across two floors, there's also a cocktail bar and two private dining rooms. Overall it seems to be in the in the high-end territory of a restaurant like Akoko and looks like one to watch.
