4/11/24 - updated with the opening date
There are crazy shakes and then there are 100% certifiable ones. Clearly those at NYC burger group Black Tap fall into the latter category and they're about to hit London. The burger and craft beer group opened its first branch in New York's Soho back in 2015 where they quickly became known not for their burgers or beer, but their milkshakes. First off they are huge - towering confections topped with whole slices of cake, jelly doughnuts or Oreo cookie sandwiches. They also bring in regular specials, the most recent being a pineapple upside-down crazy shake.
As for the burgers, they also sound pretty good. They've won the New York City Wine and Food Festival Burger Bash three times in a row. In the states they're made with 100% Black Angus USDA beef and choices include a Frita Cubana made with 50/50 pork and beef, sofrito butter and crispy potato strings and The Champ, their award-winning wagyu burger with blue cheese, rocket and house buttermilk dill.
We'll admit too to being interested to try the sides which randomly include both street corn nachos, fried pickles and - wait for it - crispy brussels sprouts.
The people behind it are Chris Barish and Julie Mulligan. Barish ought to know a thing or two about restaurants being the son of Planet Hollywood founder Keith Barish. Their first opening in the UK will be at Westfield Stratford but they're also working on a flagship restaurant in the heart of Soho.
