There’s an impressive new dining destination about to hit Mayfair. The Barley Mow is a pub and restaurant set in a Grade-II-listed building on the corner of Brown Hart Gardens and Duke Street. The building was snapped up by pub group Cubitt House a while back, after closing down during the pandemic. Now you can admire the refurbished surroundings and sink an ale with the likes of haggis Scotch eggs or battered pollock, chips and mushy peas. You’ll be in good hands with General Manager Lara Rogers, who learned the business under the expert tutelage of her father Oisin Rogers when they were both at the Guinea Grill.
As for The Barley Mow’s restaurant, that’ll be run by Ben Tish as Chef Director. He’s overseeing the food at the first-floor, 45-seater space, which aims to be both contemporary and clubby. To be honest, they had us at ‘Neal’s Yard cheese display’, but there’s also an open bar and daily roasts from the carvery (arriving via tableside silver service with all the accompaniments).
Ben, along with Head Chef Chris Fordham-Smith (previously at The Great Northern Hotel and The Westbury), will serve up Anglo-French-inspired seasonal classics, such as:
- Soused mackerel, fennel, cucumber and crème fraiche
- Roasted celeriac, beetroot and lentil cottage pie
- Native breed beef pie and mash with parsley sauce
- Sticky toffee pudding, salted caramel sauce and Ivy House clotted cream
The reopening of this and The Audley round the corner signals a real uptick in the state of Mayfair's pub scene and we are all for it.
