Who among us will be able to forget the great sourdough craze of the first Covid Lockdown? How could you call yourself a real foodie if you weren't faffing around with starters and whatnot while confined to your home?
Up in Crouch End, one couple who spent the lockdown supplying sourdough out of their own kitchen to the local area are now parlaying their kitchen table business into a fully-fledged bakery.
Sophia Sutton Jones and her husband Jesse are Crouch End locals. Sophia grew up with baking in the blood - her dad's a trained baker. During Lockdown they started out with just a few loaves that they would deliver to neighbours - by the end that had grown to nearly 200 loaves a week, along with items like sourdough focaccia, croissants, doughnuts and more.
Deciding it was time to make their hobby a business they turned to crowdfunding to raise money and smashed their original £25k goal with a current total of £33k. Their bakery, Sourdough Sophia, will open in Crouch End next month.
That's not all. They have dreams of turning the bakery into a space to learn about baking, hosting online training sessions. And, as if all that wasn't enough to be getting on with, Sophia's also self-published a paperback book, , Sourdough Like A Pro, with the first 1500 copies sold out and a second batch already ordered.
If you spent lockdown or furlough mainly binge-watching Netflix or Marie Kondoing your sock drawer, all this is going to make you feel like a bit of an underachiever. But there's probably a Sourdough Sophia baked good that'll help make things better.
