Draughts is turning the old Shanghai/F Cooke site in Dalston into a board games paradise

draughts opens on Kingsland high street where shanghai used to be

From pies and mash, to Chinese food, and now to board games and cocktails - 41 Kingsland High Street has had quite the history. For years it was the site of F Cooke pie and mash shop - leaving it a legacy of gorgeous tiled interiors and winning it a Grade II listing. More recently it was home to the Shanghai Chinese restaurant and karaoke spot. Last we heard Charlotte Wilde, formerly of Sager + Wilde, had earmarked it for her Darling wine bar.

But now the building has taken a different turn. Where once Eastenders slopped liquor over pies and mushy peas, you'll now be more likely to find folks quibbling over mortgaging Mayfair on Monopoly or ordering an Espresso Martini to sip while contemplating their next move in Kerplunk.

The space has been taken over by the board game cafe Draughts, who are moving from their current space in Haggerston to here. You'll enter via the original 1910 bar complete with booths before heading through to the main area with different rooms and sections and the choice of over 1000 different games to play.

If you're looking for a party venue with a difference, then take note that they've turned the building's top floor office into a retro private dining room, complete with several hidden features - perfect for planning a murder mystery dinner perhaps?

The food side of things will be run in partnership with Andy Jones, who also do the food at Draughts Waterloo.
